Five Tips For Tube Riding By Joel Parkinson

by Tropicsurf Blog April 16, 2025

You’ve chased waves long enough to know the barrel is the holy grail - and also one of the hardest things to master. But with the right mindset and a few key adjustments, it doesn’t have to remain a mystery. Joel Parkinson has spent a lifetime refining the art, and in this guide, he shares insights that go beyond the usual surf chatter. No fluff, no hype; just real, practical advice from a world champ who knows what it takes to make the drop, hold your line, and come out smiling.

1. Read the Wave:

Understand the wave's characteristics, including its size, water volume, and how it's shaping up: is it sucking a lot of water up from a reef? Is it going to speed up or slow down in certain sections as it hits shallower or deeper water? Predicting a barrel is essential but can be tricky.

2. Master Your Position:

Maintain a low and solid stance on your board, especially on your backhand. Adjust your position to handle changes in the wave's speed and shape. For example, on your forehand, shift your backfoot forward off your tail pad to give you more drive in the barrel, or, if riding backhand, get your head and chest in front of your leading foot in the 'pig dog'.

3. Don't Outrun the Barrel:

Stay connected to the wave by using your arm as an anchor against the barrel's wall. Adjust your arm's position to control your speed.

4. Ride it Out or Jump Off:

Decide whether to ride the barrel until the end or jump off. Remember that jumping off can lead to injuries, so it's often better to stay on your board unless it's absolutely necessary. Practice riding closeouts for better skills.

5. Focus on the Top Lip:

Always keep your eye on the top lip of the barrel, right where it's about to curl over. This is your key reference point for riding the tube. My Dad gave me this advice when I was ten years old. Game changer!
