Jon Frank

Professional Photographer, cinematographer and visual artist

Australian Based

At age 19, Jon was accepted into the photography certificate course at the Sydney Institute of Technology (photography is not art!) where he learned how to photograph a glass bottle on 4x5” film. On graduating, Jon turned his attention to taking pictures of two of the three things he was interested in. The ocean and surfing remained his muses for over two decades as an editorial photographer for domestic and international magazines, and within his personal artistic work.

Jon transitioned into film-making in 1995 with Litmus, made with Andrew Kidman. The film premiered on VHS in his Cronulla lounge-room in 1996 and went on to become the cult surfing film of the generation.

Post Litmus, Jon continued shooting stills and motion pictures of surfing, travelling worldwide for a range of eclectic clients. During this period he directed and photographed several 16mm surf movies, mostly within the biopic and travel adventure genre, and mounted exhibitions of photography.

Jon collaborated four times with Richard Tognetti, the artistic director of The Australian Chamber Orchestra. Over a six-year period creating four unique classical music concerts featuring video projections behind live orchestra. Performance venues included The Sydney Opera House, The Palais Theatre (opening the Melbourne festival), The Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles) and The Barbican (London).

In recent years, Jon has worked on a number of projects for social causes and not-for-profits and on a variety of small and large budget film projects, as both a camera operator and water specialist. Clients worthy of name-dropping include: Jane Campion, Top of the Lake 2; Sir Kenneth Branagh, Artemis Fowl; & Simon Baker, Breath.

In 2017 Jon started an independent book publishing company, but as usual he was working out of his garage. In a rare smart move, he enlisted the formidable design skills of Stuart Geddes. Their first book Broken, won multiple Australian design awards. Their next book, On Bones, was released in 2018. Surprisingly, a book of black & white photography interspersed with extracts from a 1000 line poem about the end of the millennium hasn’t been flying off the shelves.

As a means of continuing his professional and personal development, in 2019 Jon spent a year working as a video producer for an Aboriginal media organisation in a remote community in Australia’s Northern Territory. The Warlpiri mob were fabulous to live and work with.

Jon is a CASA certified RPAS drone pilot and PADI open water diver. Jon owns neither a drone nor a scuba tank.
